Rafael Lozano-Hemmer
Vicious Circular Breathing

14 September 2013 - 16 February 2014

The focus of the Rafael Lozano-Hemmer exhibition on view at Borusan Contemporary is a particular thread of his practice that explores the very personal and emotionally evocative nature of his art that embodies and activates signs of life. All of the installations in the 2nd and 4th floor galleries are conceptually rooted in decidedly core human physical labors that include the beating heart, the breathing body and the keystone of human communication, the voice.
The individual museum-goer's breath, speech and pulse, form the content of the installations on view; reminiscent of the significance of not only our solitary selves, but of the position of the individual in the greater whole of our complex collective lives.
The work is produced with technologies both high and low including biometric sensors, projection, custom software, and motorized mechanics... Not to mention air, paper bags and people.
Multidisciplinary in nature, the show features a newly commissioned, large scale installation, entitled Vicious Circular Breathing, which functions as the conceptual departure point for this exhibition, as well as existing gallery works and live events.
The exhibition in the galleries is contextualized by a special selection of smaller works by Lozano-Hemmer that can be found in the fourth floor office space.
